Descendants of Thomas BURNETT of Preston under Scar
A Thomas BURNET was listed
with one hearth at Preston in hearth tax
returns for the wapentakes of Gilling West and Hang West at Michaelmas 1673. No
doubt this individual, who is thought to have arrived in Preston
c1650. There were two other individuals
listed in these tax returns who might have been related to Thomas: a Richard
BURNIT with one hearth at nearby Redmire and William BURNIT with one hearth at East Witton. The
parish registers for Bolton cum Redmire show
that two individuals, Christopher & George BURNETT, were having children
baptised there from 1681. Later entries
in the register have John & Robert BURNETT having children baptised -
Robert's children included a son named Richard.
There was certainly a branch of BURNETT at Redmire but how long they had
been there is not clear and though it is quite likely that Thomas BURNETT who
established the branch of the name at Preston
under Scar was a member of the Redmire family, this has yet to be confirmed in
primary sources.
